Have you ever worked with a senior staff member who bossed others around the office just to feel superior?

Were you ever the girlfriend of a man who filled his life with expensive cars, Rolex watches and exorbitant goods just to get the attention of others?

Have you ever witnessed a child bullying others smaller than them in the playground?

The above examples describe three individuals of different ages with one thing in common – an unquenchable thirst for power.

Desires for power are born out of insecurity

A deeper look into the psychology of power hungry people actually reveals that those who strive for power are in need of it the most. Negative childhood experiences such as poverty or lack of parental care and attention tend to develop a craving for power.

This craving for power may translate as a domineering and controlling character or a condition similar to megalomania whereby one tries to get the attention of others.

The poor kid on the block

Danny grew up as one of the poorest in his neighbourhood. While other children played with their new toys and bikes, Danny had to work odd jobs to make enough money to buy his school clothes and candy. He looked at the other kids who had nice things in envy.

The situation in his house was not stable either. Danny’s mother was never really home as she worked full time, she also failed to give him enough attention. His father was also always out of a job – as a result he spent most of his time drinking whisky and putting Danny down.

Danny became so money hungry that as a young man he decided to take an illegal job in an underground casino to make lots of money. He started hoarding designer label items and then found himself buying a BMW and a Rolex watch. This enabled him to impress and date many women.

Subconsciously by flashing money and designer goods, Danny was striving to get the attention from other girls that his mother never gave him. He also tried to get the attention of people around him to finally prove that he was rich and worth something.

Constant craving

The truth is though, that Danny will never be satisfied in his thirst for power. He will always find himself on a never ending journey, seeking the adoration of women and the approval of those around him.

No amount of girlfriends or luxury cars and goods will ever fill the gap he has inside. This can only work from the inside out, when he finally deals with his emotional issues and dysfunctional childhood.
